I’m often uncomfortable attending services on the Sunday marking the anniversary of the inauguration of the UCA. I often find them laden with an unhelpful sense of “God, we thank you that we are not like other churches …” (see Luke 18:11).
I believe the lesson from Galatians in our Pentecost 2 set of readings for this day provides us with a healthy corrective to this temptation to denominational hubris, with Paul’s statement that “As many of you who were baptised into Christ have clothed yourself with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female, for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.”
