This reading begins with another parable plus explanation. Matthew inserts two short word pictures between the parable and the explanation (we’ll read them next week). The interpretation is a bit uncomfortable. The seed represents people, not the word as in last week’s story. The field (the world) carries a mixed crop, and is allowed to continue that way. There are “children of the kingdom” put there by the son of man and “children of the evil one”, put there by the devil. Angels collect up the evildoers and subject them to punishment. The righteous “shine like the sun” in the kingdom of the Father. Take note – listen, says Jesus. What do we learn? That a “sorting out” will happen in the end – but it is not our responsibility. Relax. God intends us to live and grow – and to shine – in this mixed-up world.
