Jesus challenges our view of what it means to follow. John’s “wowser” approach wasn’t to everyone’s liking, and the way Jesus joined in meals and celebrations with “undesirables” left people “tut-tutting”. But for those open to seeing it, something new was happening. There’s an open offer to those who are overburdened. The “easy yoke” is a bit like a backpack that fits comfortably. Yes, there is a load to carry, but it is a “fitting” load. It’s a load that involves learning from Jesus as we follow him. And in taking on that “backpack”, there is relief for the soul.
