On Humanity Sunday in the Season of Creation one of the readings is Psalm 8. A short Psalm of praise to God the creator and the role of humans in caring for that creation. On this day it is more about just caring for the whole of God’s creation – it is about caring for each other as humans as well – just as God cares for us.
I visit the Australian Age of Dinosaurs most years and camp on site with a number of other volunteers. Most evenings everyone in residence gathers on the edge of a cliff and looks out over the lights of Winton and the flat land below. The colours of the sunsets are always special and different. It is also a time of talking about how our day has been. As we are all doing similar work – the slowness and the problems are understood by everyone there. It is a community formed by a common interest, that changes as people arrive and leave. It is also a community that support each other. Perhaps today is a time to consider what groups you are part of that have formed a community of support for one another and to thank God for the people within that community for the past support they have provided and for the ongoing support the group can give to one another.
